My internship with the Houston Rockets changed my life and launched what has been a career in sports media that has spanned two decades. Internships are vital for any young professional to gain real world career experience. Too many interns, though, fail to get the most of out the opportunity.

Candidly, I have seen so many interns screw up internships that I am writing a book solely focused on helping interns maximize their internships. From what to do and what not to do to what to say when you meet the CEO and what to wear, it will offer everything you need to get the most out of the experience.

Please Look Up From Your Phone
If you are constantly scrolling through your Instagram feed during your internship, you're missing an outstanding opportunity.

No one will approach you if you're constantly looking down, focusing on your smartphone and have an unpleasant look on your face. Making eye contact with potential colleagues, mentors and references is so important.

"Eye contact is critical because it can help foster a connection and trust," says author Debra Fine in her book The Fine Art of Small Talk.

A friendly demeanor makes it easier for someone to say hello to you and strike up a conversation. You never know. You might end up making a connection with a person who could help you land a job, provide a reference or become a lifelong colleague that can provide guidance to you throughout your career.
